Recycling
The City of Anderson encourages voluntary recycling efforts. Anderson County operates sixteen convenience centers for residential use, two of which are located in the vicinity of the City of Anderson. The Civic Center Convenience Center, located at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Woodcrest Drive, is open 8am-6pm, seven days a week. The White Street Convenience Center, located on White Street adjacent to the Anderson Memorial Stadium, is open 8am-6pm, Monday-Saturday.

The convenience centers accept as recyclables: aluminum cans; steel cans; green, brown and clear glass; plastics #1 and #2; cellular phones; mixed paper; newspaper; cardboard (no waxed coating); used motor oil, bottles and filters; lead car and truck batteries; ink-jet cartridges.

Anderson County Environmental Services also operates a Recycling Education Center located on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd across from the Anderson Civic Center/Sports and Entertainment Complex. The Recycling Education Center includes a resource facility with instructional materials, detail grass plots, butterfly garden, meeting space and an open-air covered pavilion for larger classes and demonstrations.

More information is available at www.andersoncountysc.org/web/Recycle_00.asp or by calling Anderson County Environmental Services at 864-260-1001.

Stormwater Utility
In 2006 the City of Anderson began a process to implement a stormwater management program as required by the State and Federal government. This process required the City to submit an application for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.

The permit requires the City to address the quality of stormwater runoff through a number of requirements, including a reliable and sufficient source of funding for the program. To this end, the City has established a Stormwater Utility.

City Moves to Biodiesel Fuel
B20 biodiesel fuel has been in use for the last two months in all of the City's diesel-powered vehicles and equipment except for the firefighting apparatus which fuel at their own location. The fuel is a blend of 80 percent ultra-low sulfur petroleum diesel and 20 percent of the mix produced from soybean oil manufactured in Taylors, S.C. Kerry Stalnaker, superintendent of Fleet Services Department said, "Being made from renewable resources, the use of B20 promotes the local economy and helps decrease our dependence on foreign oil. It also lessens the health risks associated with petroleum diesel by reducing exhaust emissions and particulate matter released into the environment."

New Telephone Number
Call 231-2246 for garbage cart service (new and repairs). The toll free number in the blue pages of the telephone book no longer works.

Tap Water
The water from your tap does much more than quench your thirst and provide you with reliable, high quality drinking water. It delivers fire protection for the public health and safety, it supports, sustains, and enhances the local economy, and it adds value to our quality of life. "The installation of a new water line on Reed Road between Concord Road and East Greenville Street is part of our commitment to continue to improve and maintain this important community resource," said Electric City Utilities Director Jeff Caldwell. This new line will serve to increase water circulation thereby improving the pressure and the quality of the water. You can expect minor traffic delays during the construction. Work has already been completed on Salem Church Road and Civic Center Boulevard. The next improvement areas are Clemson Boulevard, North Main Street, Masters Boulevard, East River Street, and Rogers Road with all of the $2.7 million improvements to be completed by January 2007. Thanks for your patience during the improvement of this critical community infrastructure.

Meter Test
Did you know that if you own a residential irrigation meter, you must have your backflow device tested annually? Why is testing required? The City maintains a Cross Connection Control Program that ensures your water source is protected from contamination with properly installed and operating backflow prevention devices as required by SCDHEC and EPA guidelines. For your convenience, the city can perform the backflow test for a $35 fee which can be paid at the time of service or applied to your monthly water bill. For more info, call (864) 231-5230.

Recycle Grass Clippings
Weekly, City crews collect neighborhood yard waste and dispose of it at the Starr C&D Landfill. You can help reduce this waste stream and conserve landfill space by recycling your yard waste. Consider creating backyard compost. You may even discover composting to be a good way to re-use natural elements, help the environment, conserve dollars, and produce a high quality and inexpensive soil amendment all at the same time. If you have questions, call Public Works at 231-2246.

City Prepares for Future
When you reach for that glass of water, you don't worry about how it got to your kitchen faucet. The City of Anderson does the worrying for you. And to make sure that our city can meet the potable water needs of our growing community, two new elevated water tanks will be constructed over the next 18 months. City officials unveiled the tank designs last month. One tank will be located on McConnell Springs Road thanks to the land donated by AnMed Health. The other tank will be located just off of the Mall Road on Civic Center Boulevard Extension (behind the Mall). These single-pedestal, 500,000 gallon tanks will be painted to depict hot air balloons for which our community is known and will proudly bear The Electric City logo.

What is trash?

Collection schedule:

How you can help?

If you are interested in obtaining this mulched material, call (864) 231-2246. The City will haul it to you free provided that the haul distance is less than the distance to the landfill. Monitor the city website or call Public Works, (864) 231-2246 to determine your collection day.

Separate Trash
Different types of trash require specific types of disposal. You can help keep our streets cleaner and provide a more efficient means of collection by separating your trash appropriately. Please remember to separate your limbs, leaves, and other yard waste from household materials such as construction debris and appliances. Metal and appliances must be separated, too. So, if the City collected your neighbor's trash and left your trash behind, the problem may be mixed trash that cannot be collected by City crews. If you have questions, call (864) 231-2246.
