Public Input Session for Recreation Master Plan
You are invited to attend one of the public meetings listed below and tell us what you think. The basic template of our master plan is exciting. Come and view the renderings and add your inspiration to the process. Help us make sure that Anderson remains a healthy, and greener, place for all of us to live, work and play.

Summer Camps
The recreation department has several swimming and basketball camps planned for the summer. Dates, times and prices vary. Obtain more information from the links below or call 231-2232.

Netball Demonstration
The City of Anderson Parks and Recreation Department will present a new sport to the area. Netball is an adaptation of basketball. The object of the game is to score goals from within a defined area by throwing a ball into a ring that is attached to a post 10 feet high. Already popular internationally, it is being introduced to the states with teams already in New York, Florida, Virginia, Georgia, and California.

There will be free demonstrations of the game at the Anderson Rec Center Saturday, April 12th at 10 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. The teams in action will be from Georgia. Free Australian Sausage Sizzle (Snag on the Barbie) will also be available. Everyone is invited to attend.

William E. Watson Park Dedication
City of Anderson officials will dedicate the William E. Watson Park on Thursday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. This dedication marks the recognition of Mr. Watson's contributions to the community by naming the park in his honor. "The park serves as a lasting tribute to the late Mr. Watson who was instrumental in developing many of the residential neighborhoods which not only provided quality housing, but pleasing neighborhoods," said City Councilman Tom W. Dunaway. Formerly known as Bellview Park, Mr. Watson gave the land to the city for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. Mr. Dunaway introduced an ordinance a year ago to change the name of Bellview Park to William E. Watson Park.

After the naming of the park, crews installed the prototype park sign bearing the Watson name along with initial landscaping. The park is likely to see more improvements in the future as the public planning process continues with staff and Arbor Engineering. Arbor Engineering is expected to complete the city-wide park plans by summer. While Watson Park is mostly passive in nature, neighborhood baseball practice, pick-up games, and picnic lunches are a frequent site. "Greenspaces for play and family recreation are important to our city. Watson Park is a good example of how a small amount of space can be an asset to a neighborhood. With the help of our citizens, our ongoing planning process will help to make the most out of this and many other parks throughout the city," said Mayor Terence Roberts.

Best Place to have a Picnic

Cater's Lake was voted "Best Place to have a Picnic" by the readers of the Anderson Independent-Mail who participated in the "2007 Anderson Independent-Mail Best of the Be Readers' Choice Awards."

Cater's Lake is seven acres on Greenville Street. This passive park area is one of our most noted parks within the City of Anderson. The focal point of this site is a large pond in which the City has installed a lighted aeration fountain. There are picnic tables at this facility and a limited walking trail. Cater's Lake is home to many fine feathered ducks and geese who have become accustomed to the many trips by families and individuals to feed them each day. Although this park is located on a busy thoroughfare within the city, it has a quite neighborhood feeling that attracts many patrons during their lunch hours and picnics with the kids.
