CLASS TITLE: CREW WORKER I

BEAUTIFICATION DIVISION
Salary: 15.49 hourly

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

The purpose of the class is to perform unskilled work involved in the installation and maintenance of City grounds, and to perform related work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Performs general groundskeeping work, including but not limited to preparing soil for planting, installing landscape materials, watering plants and trees, pruning trees and shrubbery, removing weeds, mowing grass, raking leaves, etc.
  • Applies pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals as needed to ensure landscape health.
  • Removes debris from sidewalks, streets and other paved surfaces.
  • Maintains and cleans assigned tools and equipment.
  • Operates vehicles, trucks and equipment such as a tiller, mower, weedeater, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, spray equipment and other power and hand tools as necessary to complete duties.
  • Prepares accurate and up-to-date records of work completed.
  • Performs all work in compliance with applicable policies and procedures, laws and regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:

Requires comparing or inspecting items against a standard.

PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:

Requires following instructions and orders of supervisor.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring moderate instruction and experience, such as landscape / grounds equipment, power tools

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Requires performing routine work using common sense.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires reading simple sentences, instructions or work orders; writing simple sentences and completing simple job forms; speaking simple sentences using basic grammar.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires doing simple, repetitive manual, clerical or operating tasks following a few definite procedures; requires minor short-term planning; requires little attention for accurate results.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • S.C. Pesticide Applicator’s license is desirable.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires some general grounds maintenance or manual labor work experience.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, toxic/caustic chemicals, poisonous plants.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception, texture perception, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
