Position Summary |
Crew Workers perform semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance work to support the operations of the designated department and to perform other work as required. This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.
Position Responsibilities – Essential Job Functions |
To ensure the greatest possible protection for employees in the workplace, the City of Anderson requires cooperative efforts of all employees with help in establishing and maintaining a safe and healthful work environment.
The City of Anderson requires that PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) be used by employees whenever workplace hazards are discovered that could damage any part of the body. In addition, the City of Anderson requires all employees to wear PPE, such as but not limited to, safety glasses, face shields, safety shoes, hearing protection (ear plugs/ear muffs), gloves, etc. as required by their job duties. PPE is to be used as a tool to eliminate and/or reduce the hazards employees face in their daily job duties.
PPE is not to be used and will not be used as a substitute for safe work practices, machine guards, or other controls designed by equipment manufacturers or other engineering sources. PPE is to be used in conjunction with these controls to increase employee protection.
Crew Worker job descriptions are distinguished from Crew Worker I (Beautification), Crew Worker I (Cemetery), Crew Worker I (Recreation), Crew Worker I (Sanitation), Crew Worker (Streets), and Crew Worker II (Streets) by training, experience, responsibilities, and the type of trucks/equipment regularly required to be operated.
Crew Worker I (Beautification) – performs unskilled work involved in the installation and maintenance of City grounds, and to perform related work as required.
Crew Worker I (Cemetery) – performs maintenance work to support the operations of the Cemetery Department and engages in preparing graves, maintaining cemetery grounds, and performing related work in the cemetery.
Crew Worker I (Recreation) – performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance of City parks and recreational facilities, and to perform related work as required.
Crew Worker I (Sanitation) – collects and deposits garbage into trucks, and performs other work as required.
Crew Worker I (Streets) – performs unskilled maintenance work to support the operations of the Streets Division and performs other work as required.
Crew Worker II (Streets) – performs semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance work to support the operations of the Street Division and performs other work as required.
The tasks listed below are those that represent a majority of the time spent working in this job description. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of Crew Workers as necessary.
Department Specific Job Functions for Crew Worker I (Beautification):
- Performs general groundskeeping work, including but not limited to preparing soil for planting, installing landscape materials, watering plants and trees, pruning trees and shrubbery, removing weeds, mowing grass, raking leaves, etc.
- Applies pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other chemicals as needed to ensure landscape health.
- Removes debris from sidewalks, streets and other paved surfaces.
- Maintains and cleans assigned tools and equipment.
- Operates vehicles, trucks and equipment such as a tiller, mower, weed eater, edger, blower, hedge trimmer, spray equipment and other power and hand tools as necessary to complete duties.
- Prepares accurate and up-to-date records of work completed.
- Performs all work in compliance with applicable policies and procedures, laws and regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
Department Specific Job Functions for Crew Worker I (Cemetery):
- Performs daily duties in opening and closing graves, cutting grass, trimming hedges, setting stones and foundations, trimming trees, raking leaves, maintains overall appearance of cemetery.
- Assists public with questions regarding cemetery.
- Performs basic maintenance on lawn equipment.
- Applies pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and other chemicals as needed.
- Hauls materials and equipment to and from work sites.
- Performs general manual labor tasks as required.
- Assists in maintaining assigned trucks and equipment; performs cleaning, preventive maintenance and simple repair work as required.
- Drives and operates trucks and other vehicles; operates various hand and power tools as necessary to accomplish tasks.
- Performs duties in accordance with all department policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Attends training, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Department Specific Job Functions for Crew Worker I (Recreation):
- Maintains City parks, recreational facilities and/or ball fields as assigned.
- Inspects parks and related facilities for safety; initiates and/or informs supervisor of maintenance
and repair work required. - Performs general building maintenance and repair work as required, including basic carpentry,
plumbing, HVAC and electrical work. - Strips, waxes and buffs interior flooring.
- Constructs and/or assembles, installs, maintains and repairs playground equipment, picnic
tables, fencing and other park structures. - Paints facilities and other structures.
- Prepares ball fields for play; drags, manicures, lines and aerates playing fields; builds up mounds
and/or levels fields; removes rocks and debris. - Performs routine grounds maintenance work as assigned, including but not limited to planting
grass seed and/or installing sod, mowing grass, fertilizing grass, applying herbicides and
pesticides, trimming shrubbery and trees, removing weeds, removing trees, watering lawns and
plants, etc. - Removes debris and trash from grounds and facilities.
- Transports equipment and other items to and from work sites as directed.
- Maintains and performs minor repairs of department vehicles and equipment.
- Prepares and submits various records and reports as required.
- Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance, concerns and complaints in areas of

Department Specific Job Functions for Crew Worker I (Sanitation):
- Rides on rear of garbage collection trucks on assigned residential and/or commercial routes.
- Collects and deposits curbside garbage into trucks.
- Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse.
- Performs general manual labor tasks as required.
- Assists in maintaining assigned trucks and equipment.
- Performs duties in accordance with all division policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Assists co-workers with various duties as required.
- Attends training, meetings, etc., as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Department Specific Job Functions for Crew Worker I (Streets):
- Performs unskilled maintenance work to assist with the construction and maintenance of City streets, roads, bridges, sidewalks, driveways, and drainage structures.
- Assists with asphalt and concrete work.
- Digs trenches for pipelines.
- Unclogs drains.
- Performs routine demolition work as required.
- Removes trees and other vegetation as necessary at work sites; mows grass.
- Hauls materials and equipment to and from work sites.
- Performs general manual labor tasks as required.
- Assists in maintaining assigned trucks and equipment; performs cleaning, preventive maintenance and simple repair work as required.
- Drives and operates trucks and other vehicles; operates various hand and power tools as necessary to accomplish tasks.
- Performs duties in accordance with all department policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Assists co-workers of assigned division and other divisions with various duties as required, including but not limited to garbage collection.

- May assist with concrete work as requested.
- Digs trenches for pipelines; sets grades for and places pipes.
- Performs routine demolition work as required.
- Removes trees and other vegetation as necessary at work sites; mows grass.
- Hauls materials and equipment to and from work sites.
- Performs general manual labor tasks as required.
- Assists in maintaining assigned trucks and equipment; performs cleaning, preventive maintenance and simple repair work as required.

Essential Skills and Experience |
- Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.
- Must possess a valid state CDL driver’s license.
Crew Worker I (Beautification):
- C. Pesticide Applicator’s License is desirable.
- Requires some general grounds maintenance or manual labor work experience.
Crew Worker I (Cemetery, Streets) and Crew Worker II (Streets):
- Must possess a valid state CDL driver’s license.
- Requires some general grounds maintenance or manual labor work experience (one year for Crew Worker II including street work experience).
- Skills in the operation of the listed tools and equipment.
Crew Worker I (Recreation):
- HVAC refrigerant transition and recovery certification is desirable.
- Requires over one year and up to and including two years.
Crew Worker I (Sanitation):
- Requires a short demonstration up to and including one month.
