Job duty 1 of 3
The Major under direction of the Chief of Police administers and oversees all operations of the Police Department; supervises division commanders and other staff to ensure that law and order are maintained, laws and ordinances enforced and all departmental operations are properly maintained and implemented; to ensure the maintenance of a positive and cooperative relationship between the department and the community served and to perform related law enforcement, supervisory and administrative duties as required.

Researches and formulates long-range goals for the organization develops policy and position documents while negotiating with chief administrative officers and/or elected officials. The Major reports directly to the Police Chief. Develops and ensures implementation of policies and procedures to govern the activities of the police department; sets and enforces policy for performing the legal functions of the office.
Job duty 3 of 3
Assists in the operation of City of Anderson Police Department Detention Center, which is a municipal detention center and a federal detention center. Provides supervision to an entire staff of detention officers and administrative staff, which includes effectively enforcing policies and procedures and maintaining the security of the facility for the safety and welfare of staff, visitors, inmates and the public. Assists the detention center to meet the standards of the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
Qualifications

Qualification 1 of 3
Requires Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) or equivalent experience supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of four years of college education or specialized advanced training or experience in police science, criminal justice or a closely related field.
Qualification 2 of 3
Must possess law enforcement officer certification in state and/or out of state with the ability to acquire South Carolina law enforcement certification within one year. Must possess a valid state driver’s license. May be required to possess or obtain additional professional or technical certifications as deemed necessary by Police Chief.
Qualification 3 of 3
Requires fifteen years or more of law enforcement experience, which five years have been in a supervisory or executive law enforcement leadership position.
